Technoid - Olive The Movie - Nokia N8 Smartphone Camera Rig

Getting a clue is often the first stumbling block for creatives, all the skill in the world is next to useless without a great idea. Hooman Khalili first got the idea to make a feature film shot entirely on a smartphone in January 2010. A little less than two years later, his film Olive, shot on a Nokia N8, is going to be shown in a Los Angeles theatre for a week. The film simply put is about a little girl that transforms the lives of three people without speaking one word. The movie stars two time Academy Award nominated actress Gena Rowlands (The Notebook, A Woman Under the Influence). While it all sounds too simple, it wasn’t, the impressive inventiveness from techs shines through in the quality of this flick. The movie was shot using the Nokia N8’s 12-megapixel camera and a customized 35mm lens adapter – attached with double-sided tape. The mobility of the phone also made for a shallow depth of field and easier maneuvering. Khalili attached the N8 to ladders, remote control helicopters, and motorcycles to capture some of the shots in the film. M★C  READ MORE

The growth of Googles Android platform has been stratospheric over the past 12 months, at October 2010 Android held 19 percent of the U.S. smartphone market – with Apples iPhone iOS at 24 percent. Fast forward 12 months to October 2011 and Android was holding 38 percent of the smartphone market, an increase of almost 20 percent, against Apples 26 percent market share, an increase of only 2 percent. Androids big big numbers are also reflected in it’s massive increase of available apps to 500,000. Android has also overtaken iOS in app downloads, becoming the market leader in mobile application downloads. The market shares of Android and iOS were 44% and 31%, respectively in Q2 2011. Note worthy in all these numbers is Samsungs strangle hold on the smartphone market. Our favorite semiconductor behemoth has consistently outperformed Apple in sales. Samsung smartphones make up almost 25 percent of the U.S. market, while the much lauded Apple iPhone has consistently sat below 9 percent. This explains Apples aggression toward Samsung [check the litigation links]  84.5 million smartphone handsets in the U.S. equates to 21 million Samsung handsets to Apples 8 million iPhones, ouch! Every now and then the internet does something truly inspiring! Our least favorite rabble rousers, Anonymous, have finally done something with real meaning. The Hactivist group has taken – excuse the bad taste – a back door into a Pedophile site, rumaged around and caused a little chaos. Yeehaa, you guys now rock our world! The takedown is part of Anonymous’ Operation Darknet, an anti-child-pornography effort aimed at thwarting child pornographers operating on on the dark networks. Anonymous’ attack focused on a hosting service called Freedom Hosting, which the group claims was the largest host of child pornography on Tor. “By taking down Freedom Hosting, we are eliminating 40+ child pornography websites,” Anonymous claimed in its statement. “Among these is Lolita City, one of the largest child pornography websites to date, containing more than 100GB of child pornography.Lolita City, a child pornography site run on a hidden “darknet,” has been taken down by Anonymous members, and account details of 1,600 users from the site’s database were posted as evidence. “You may hold us to every last word, for we will never turn a deaf ear upon the screams of innocent children. you know who you are, and so do we . . ” V★P READ MORE

Samsung says it has filed for preliminary injunctions in courts in Australia and Japan, seeking a ban on sales of the iPhone 4S on the grounds it infringes Samsung’s technology patents. The South Korean semiconductor, consumer electronics and gadget behemoth says it is also seeking a sales ban on the iPhone 4 and iPad 2 in Japan. In May 2011 Apple won a temporary ban on sales of Samsung’s Galaxy 10.1 tablet in Australia. The filing in Japan cites infringement of technology patents, Samsung said, accusing Apple of also violating in Australia three of its wireless technologies essential for operating mobile phones. In a separate filing, Samsung also appealed against an Australian court’s interim order Friday to suspend sales of its Galaxy 10.1 tablet at the request of Apple, which claims a breach of touchscreen technology patents. Samsung, the world’s number two mobile phone maker after Nokia, and Apple have been embroiled in a series of patent suits accusing each other of copying designs and technology for their smartphones and tablets. Citibank has always been a bit of a fumbling behemoth, barely – with bailout assistance from U.S. tax payers – scraping through the global financial crisis in tact, it now face an entirely new wave of trouble. Days after Citibank CEO Vikram Pandit talked about his sympathies with Occupy Wall Street and his willingness to engage with protesters. A Citibank branch in New York has locked the doors of their branch and arrested a group of Citibank account holders who wished to to close their accounts. It’s clear that Citibank are terrified that a few accounts closing will escalate to a run on the bank. “It would only take a small percentage of account holders to prove that Citibank is an economic hologram and like much of the financial sector, is desperately hiding how weak it is. The 99% are waking up and realise they’ve been duped, fleeced, conned and bullied for far too long” said Jeremy Bloom.  “NOT even in the dark dark days of the 1930s great depression – when there was actual panic – did we see anything this stupid” Here’s how it went down at the Citibank branch at 555 La Guardia Place in New York. The demonstrators – all Citibank customers –  were asked to leave, and when they tried to comply Citibank’s security locked them in and wouldn’t let them leave! 24 were arrested.
